Hello, my name is Maria and I'm a first year anthropology student at University College London. This blog is a collection of quasi-ethnographic observations, made as a part of my introduction to material culture course, structured in a (hopefully) coherent manner. Although it is primarily designed to help me learn something about the world (with a strong emphasis on the man-made material culture - artefacts, if you like), I decided to use the format of a blog rather than a regular notebook in order to share the thoughts I may come up with. So if you have any reflections, ideas, comments, anything - please share. In a way, this creates a new plane for an anthropologist or an ethnographer - every time any of you engages with the content, you create a new interpretation, influenced by your experience and mindset. This all sounds very exciting, so try not to be disappointed when you see a detailed post about, let's say, buying hot chocolate at Sainsbury's, or 1950's-style aprons. These can be exciting, too. You'll be surprised.
Thank you for reading, and hope you will enjoy it!
(And if not - well, someone could probably write a thesis on why you don't enjoy it. That's the beauty of anthropology).
